FAQ - WHEN ARE THEY COMING? As December draws near, the most frequently asked question by the students at the Hogar Armando Rosenberg in Santo Domingo is “When are the Rider students coming?” Over the past four years, students from Rider University have journeyed to this orphanage and school of three thousand to offer their services to the school. During those years besides doing manual labor, teaching English and recreating with the children, the Rider students have established bonds of friendship with the nuns, the teachers and especially the students who look forward to the return of their friends from Rider. Besides a group of nine students who will be making their second and third trips to the orphanage in January to work for two weeks, a new group of ten is preparing to make the journey in March over their spring break to continue Rider’s tradition of an “Alternate Spring Break Experience”. After interviewing nearly 30 interested students, ten were chosen and they are now learning about the Dominican culture, life and history so they are prepared for their experience. This volunteer/service learning experience sponsored by Catholic Campus Ministry offers the students an opportunity to experience another culture and to offer their time, talents and service wherever it might be needed. Projects which both groups will engage in range from unloading the cargo container shipped there from New Jersey which contains a good portion of the food, clothing, bedding and other necessities needed by the Hogar Students are prepared this year to replace and tar leaky roofs as well as continue their painting projects. Many will teach English as a second language and also respond to the inquisitive young students curious about the United States. They will also supervise athletic events for the students and befriend many of them. Thus far, this year, the students have been sponsoring fundraisers ranging from car washes, bowling parties, donating money raised while working at Great Adventure and just pure begging to try to raise $11,000 to pay for a new water purification system which is sorely needed. To date, they have raised a little over $4000. The group traveling to Santo Domingo in March contains a very diverse group of students. Uchenna Duru, of Maplewood, NJ, a sophomore business management/human resource management major; Evan Chromczak of Hellertown, PA, a sophomore Global and Multicultural Studies major; Thomas Longo III of Toms River, NJ, a junior Advertising major; Ryan Kurutz of Harrisburg, PA, senior Radio/TV Communications major; Matthew Ciociola of Clementon, NJ, a senior Chemistry/Secondary Education major; Allison Gibson of Trenton, a senior Global /Multicultural Studies and Spanish major; Joseph Lucchio of Staten Island, NY, a sophomore history m major; Jessica Pratt of Blairstown, NJ, a sophomore advertising/marketing major; Lisa Van Der Meiren of Mount Holly, NJ, a senior chemistry major and James Wismer of Princeton Junction, NJ, a junior history major. The group will again be accompanied by Deborah Venello of Lawrenceville, a member of the Rider University staff and Bruce E. Evans of Lawrenceville, a 2001 graduate of Rider who has acted as coordinator of all eight trips that have thus far been staged. |
