Rider Students to Take Alternative Spring Break

LAWRENCEVILLE - While many college students head home or off to exotic retreats during spring break, this month 9 Rider University students will travel to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, March 14-21, to work on renovation projects at a children's orphanage.

The students will provide assistance to the residents of the Hogar Escuela Armando Rosenberg Home and School located in Sabana Perdida, the largest barrio in the Dominican Republic. The home/school complex was established in the early 1980s for orphaned and abandoned children who live in impoverished conditions. Currently, two new high school buildings are under construction and when completed, are expected to increase the current student population from to 1,000 to 3,400.

Rider's student trip is sponsored by the University's Campus Ministry and the Center for Multicultural Affairs and Community Service in cooperation with The Orchid Foundation, a non-profit organization.

According to Father Bruno Ugliano, Rider's Catholic Chaplain, special emphasis will be placed on service learning. "Rider's students are going to lend a helping hand wherever needed," said Ugliano. "This is not a vacation; it is a way for Rider students to extend themselves to individuals in great need. By giving of themselves they will be learning what it means to be their brother's and sister's keeper."

During their stay, Rider's students will help renovate the home and school's playground areas and interact in various activities with the children. Throughout the trip, they will chronicle their daily experiences in a journal. Deborah Venello, administrative secretary for Rider's Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and Bruce Evans, a Rider graduate student and former Catholic Campus Ministries assistant, will serve as chaperones.

Making the journey are:

-- Joseph Abel of Iselin, a senior advertising major

-- Roxana Garcia of Puerto Rico, a senior business major

-- Sean O'Hare of Fairfax, VA, a senior management major

-- Kate Henninger of Whiting, a junior elementary education/Spanish major
